A visit to the Pink Cliffs Reserve in Heathcote Victoria.

The first outing for 2026 was for a day trip to Heathcote to visit the Pink Cliffs Geological Reserve. The group met at 11.00am in the car park after the 1hr 40 min drive from Melbourne.
The temperature was already climbing when we arrived, so we laid on the sunscreen and hats and headed off on the walking trail into and around the park.
The Pink Cliffs Geological Reserve is a remarkable area to visit on the edge of Heathcote, a fantastic place to explore with a stunning, otherworldly atmosphere. Once a hydraulic sluicing site, mining activity in the late 19th century washed away the top layer of earth, and further erosion created the dramatic, colourful cliffs on display today.
We had 11 attendees which is pretty good considering the heat. Anthony even broke out the drone for some spectacular footage and photos. Neil experimented with infrared images and pano images. After we had wandered around and taken photos we headed to Gaffney's Bakery for some lunch, cool drinks and air conditioning.
After lunch, we ventured to the other side of town up to the Viewing Rock Lookout for a brief gathering and some more photos before heading home. Some of the photos have already been shared on the facebook page.

These pink cliffs, a natural wonder created during the early days of gold mining, were formed from sluicing work in the 1880s. It’s a fantastic geological reserve perfect for bushwalking and photography.
The site is pretty easy to get to, but if you want to explore beyond the main path, you’ll need to be able to walk comfortably.
Don’t forget your camera, tripod and, if you have them, some filters (ND, polarised) and your sturdy walking shoes.
